As salaamu Alaykum
1. I am currently in the process of getting hospital plan with discovery medical aid, is this permissible and if so is it permissible to take it with gap cover.
2. My wife and I are expecting a baby, it is currently 20 weeks into the pregnancy, is it permissible to find out the gender of the baby during the pregnancy, for purposes of purchasing clothing for the child when he/she is born.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
1) In principle, conventional medical aid schemes are not permissible as they contain haram elements of interest, deceit and uncertainty.
2) It is permissible to find out the gender of the unborn child. However the process should be carried out by a female ultrasound technician/practitioner. [i]
One should keep in mind that these scans are not always accurate and the true and absolute knowledge lies with Allah.

امرأة أصابتها قرحة في موضع لا يحل للرجل أن ينظر إليه لا يحل أن ينظر إليها لكن تعلم امرأة تداويها فإن لم يجدوا امرأة تداويها ولا امرأة تتعلم ذلك إذا علمت وخيف عليها البلاء أو الوجع أو الهلاك فإنه يستر منها كل شيء إلا موضع تلك القرحة ثم يداويها الرجل ويغض بصره ما استطاع إلا عن ذلك الموضع ولا فرق في هذا بين ذوات المحارم وغيرهن لأن النظر إلى العورة لا يحل بسبب المحرمية كذا في فتاوى قاضي خان
الهداية في شرح بداية المبتدي (4/ 369)
“ويجوز للطبيب أن ينظر إلى موضع المرض منها” للضرورة “وينبغي أن يعلم امرأة مداواتها” لأن نظر الجنس إلى الجنس أسهل “فإن لم يقدروا يستر كل عضو منها سوى موضع المرض” ثم ينظر ويغض بصره ما استطاع؛ لأن ما ثبت بالضرورة يتقدر بقدرها وصار كنظر الخافضة والختان. “وكذا يجوز للرجل النظر إلى موضع الاحتقان من الرجل” لأنه مداواة ويجوز للمرض وكذا للهزال الفاحش على ما روي عن أبي يوسف؛ لأنه أمارة المرض.
