Do i have to give Kaffarah for Saum?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Salaam Alykum.

I suffer from Irritabel Bowel Syndrome (IBS), I was fasting in Ramadhan and one day my IBS flared up and I was suffering from severe stomach cramps and pains. I waited for few hours but could not cope so I ahd to break my fast to take tablet and drick Water. Do I have to give Kaffara or make up 1 qaza?

Next day I did not fast as I was still not well. However on third day I woke up for Suhoor, but did not make niyah and wanted to see how I feel, however by 9 am I was not feeling well so drank some water and took tablet again. As this correct or did I make a mistake? again do I need to do Kaffara or Qaza?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Dear Brother,

You broke your fast due to ill health. Likewise, you did not fast for the following two days also due to ill health. You will have to make qadhaa (make up) for the three days you did not fast. There is no kaffarah for breaking fast due to ill health or due to not fasting.

Kaffarah becomes compulsory only if one breaks his fast without any valid excuse in Shariah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
