i am a born Muslim and I have decided to wear a hijab 15 days ago. I got fired from my job because of it. I have read that a woman should not take her headscarf because of a job, but I am wondering if it is possible. I am not married and am studying abroad, so I need the money. Thank you in advance

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, we point out that a woman’s place is at home. Allah says:

{وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ} [الأحزاب: 33]

“And stay in your houses” (Quran, al-Ahzab, 33)

According to the Shari`ah, the father is responsible to maintain his daughter until she marries. After marriage, her husband is responsible to maintain her.

A women at home is in keeping with her feminine nature. She is also saved from humility and indignation as you have already experienced. If it is possible for you to adjust your life and remain home, you should strongly consider that.

If you have no source of income and you are compelled to work, then

  •  Conceal the form and shape of your body to the best of your ability
  •  Avoided or minimize conduct with the opposite gender
  •  Make tawbah for not covering your head and make dua to Allah to grand you relief from your predicament

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
