Using Employer Sponsored Health Insurance Plan Benefits

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) As a benefit to employees, the company I work for provides Health Insurance coverage, like most major employers in US and Canada. The company pays the premium to the insurance company and employees can use health benefits when they need them. I just bought new prescription eyeglasses and I am entitled to receive reimbursement from the Insurance company if I send them the bill. Is it permissible in Islam to receive such payment? Please enlighten me and other Muslims with an answer. JazakAllah. [Ahmed Makda]

A.) It is permissible for Muslims to use the health benefits offered by the company of their employers. That includes claiming reimbursements from the company’s Insurance Company if that is within the system of the health benefits offered to them. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
