Female Visiting a Doctor

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: Is it permissible for a woman to see a male obstetrician if her husband is present with her when the doctor does pelvic examination? At other times the husband would not be present but the doctor would just do quick ultrasound on her abdomen.

A:It is necessary that a Muslim lady sees a female Muslim doctor if such is available. If there is no Muslim female doctor, or if such a doctor is not competent or experienced enough to render treatment, then she should visit a female non-Muslim doctor.

In the absence of such a doctor, or due to the abovementioned reasons a female doctor is not an option, then only could a male doctor may be seen.

Since the woman is in the presence of a Ghayr Mahram man (the doctor), the husband should always be present, regardless of the type of examination being conducted. The type of examination is irrelevant; the purpose of the husband’s presence is to avoid her being alone with a Ghayr Mahram.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
