Oath for Marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: A boy really loves me but our ages are not ideal for marriage at this time. He gave me oath on the Quran by putting his hand on the Quran that when he is older he must marry me. I took the Quran in my hands and said: I’m with you until it is possible for me to marry. If I leave him is it a sin?

A: By you leaving that boy you did not commit a sin, and your oath did not break. You said that you will be “with him until it is possible for you”, which means that when you feel it is no longer possible to be with him, you will break away and leave him. That is what you did. It was wrong of you to have any love-relations with a boy and worse to take an oath on Quran that you will have contact with him. That was a sin. Now that you left him, you did the right thing.

So keep away from him and make taubah to Allah for the past. Allah grant you and me His Special Maghfirat.
