How to use a miswak (toothstick)?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Nazim Mangera

After using a tooth stick is it a sunnah to cut the end off that has been used, or is it a sunnah to use the same end without removing the end after each use?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaikum,

One of the etiquettes of the Miswaak is that it should not be too hard nor too soft as mentioned in Shami and in other books. You should therefore continue using it till it becomes too soft, then cut that part off and use the next part. When does it become too soft? That would be left to the user’s discretion. If you were to cut it off after each use, then that would put undue hardship on people and you would have to get a new Miswaak every couple of days.

Allah knows best

Fi Amanillah,
