Go for Jamah in Ramadan?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Can we go for Jamah in Ramadan leaving E’tikaf and completion of the holy Quran in taravih?

Answer

(Fatwa: 10/L=21/TL=1433)

You can go in Jamah in the month of Ramadan. However you can get both the virtues if any Hafiz accompanies you in Jamah and leads separate taravih salah to the people of Jamah. However, if due to unavailability of a Hafiz you cannot achieve the Sunnah of completion of the Quran in taravih likewise you cannot perform E’tikaf then it is hoped that Almighty Allah shall compensate it with the blessing of other acts of Jamah (talim-o-ta’allum, zikr, tabligh etc). However, one should try his level best to achieve the virtues of the completion of the Holy Quran in taravih. One who sits in E’tikaf cannot attend many good deeds due to E’tikaf such as janazah, visiting of the sick etc, yet Almighty Allah gives its reward.

The holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “The person performing E’tikaf remains free from sins, and he is indeed given the same reward as those who do righteous deeds (in spite of not having done those deeds as a result of having been secluded in the Masjid)”. Mishkah

Also it is mentioned in a detailed hadith that Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (رضى الله عنه) missed E’tikaf in order to fulfil the need of a Muslim. Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (رضى الله عنه) reports that while he was once performing E’tikaf in the Masjid Nabawi (Prophet’s Masjid), a certain man came to him, greeted him and sat down. Ibn Abbas said to him: “I see that you seem sad and troubled”. The man replied: “Yes, O son of the uncle of Prophet, I am indeed troubled in that I have an obligation to fulfil to someone. I swear by the holiness of the inmate of this honoured resting place (Prophet’s grave) that I am not able to fulfil this obligation”. Ibn Abbas (رضى الله عنه) inquired: “Shall I intercede with that person on your behalf?” The man replied: “By all means if you so wish”. Ibn Abbas put on his shoes and proceeded from the Masjid. The man, seeing this said: “Have you then forgotten that you are in E’tikaf?” With tears filling his eyes Ibn Abbas (رضى الله عنه) replied: “No, the time is still fresh in my mind, I heard the esteemed master of this tomb (صلى الله عليه وسلم) saying, “Whoever sets forth in the way and makes an effort of settling a necessary affair on behalf of his brother, that service shall be better for him than to perform E’tikaf for ten years, and whomsoever performs E’tikaf for a day, thereby seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah will open three trenches between him and the fire of hell, the width of each being the distance between heaven and earth”. (Fazail Amal 61-617) (And when the reward of one day’s E’tikaf is this much then what will be the reward of ten days E’tikaf).
