Question:

Sir, I have OCD which is making it very hard for me to pray prayers. I am taking medicines but it takes time to heal. I sometimes become so mad that I hurt myself for little things like purity etc. I have heard that an insane person is exempted from prayers. my question is, due to my mental condition, will I be considered insane and be exempted from prayers? My mental condition even makes it very hard to do normal things normally.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Having OCD is not considered as being insane, with regards to purity, if you are having doubts then it is said that you should ignore these doubts unless you are 100% certain that you are not pure, Rasulullah (saw) says “ leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt. Verily, truth brings peace of mind and falsehood sows doubts (Jami’ at Tirmidhi 2518)
