How To Deal With Large Amounts of Yellow Discharge?

Question:

Please advise on how to deal with large amounts of yellow discharge. As I understand it, the preferred opinion is that yellow discharge breaks wudhu when it exits the vagina; if such discharge is continuous, one can qualify as mazoor, or one can put cotton or otherwise between the labia minora to block it, which prevents wudhu from breaking.

The problem with putting cotton is sometimes the discharge is so much that it can’t be blocked by cotton and eventually leaks out. In such a case, as I understand it, wudhu is broken.

But what should one do when they have periods where they are faced with consistently large amounts of discharge? If they put cotton to block it, it does not always work long enough to pray salah / they have trouble noticing the moment the discharge has passed the cotton and end up praying when the discharge has leaked out, leading to having to repeat, and so on. But if they don’t put cotton to block it, and treat themselves as mazoor, then they worry about salah not being valid due to more than dirham’s worth of discharge leaking onto their underclothes during their prayer.

What should a person do in such a situation? Is it permissible to treat oneself as a mazoor while also putting cotton with the intention of stopping the flow from being more than a dirham’s worth, to avoid dirtying clothes for salah? Keep in mind that the cotton does stop the flow for a period of time, but not very long. Or does putting the cotton and stopping the flow for even a brief period disqualify one from being mazoor? In which case, how should one deal with the situation?

Answer:

If one is in her hayd (menstruation/period) then of course she is not required to pray or fast, however, she has to make up her fasts but not her prayers (salah).1 During the days of menstruation, whatever the woman sees of redness, yellowness and darkness of discharge, is menses. The menstruation continues until she sees proper whiteness.2

If it is irregular bleeding (Istihadha) or discharge outside of the normal menstruation time and it fulfils the conditions of being ma’dhur (excused) then there is no harm in placing cotton to prevent discharge from soiling one’s clothes during prayer.

If the bleeding or discharge is more than a dirham size is such that if one goes to wash it or clean it off then by the time one does so it becomes soiled again, before a salah can be completed, due to continuous bleeding or discharge, then one may pray in the same clothes without washing off the impurities.3
