Unsure Whether I Am a Mazoor

Question:

I’m unsure whether I am mazoor. For the last 6-7 years I’ve experienced feelings that confuse me about whether I am breaking wind or not. Sometimes I can be reasonably sure that some gust of air has come out of me without warning. Other times I feel like it’s just sensations but nothing coming out, even though I’ll hear noises as well, which could be something else causing it, but it sounds like a pop. And because of the doubt, I’ve become very disturbed and frustrated. When can I consider myself mazoor? Because at present I’m ignoring certain things but it doesn’t leave me with any contentment, just doubt, if I had knowledge and certainty in what I am doing then I would feel much better about it. Sometimes I’ll feel the gust without noise as well, so listening for sound only won’t work and I get misgivings about sounds, too. The feelings happen very regularly and there is no time period where it disappears, although it’s increased doubt after I have used the bathroom or passed wind. Is there any help you can give me to put my fears to bed?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Ibn Abbas (رضي اللّٰه عنه) narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Satan comes to one of you and blows air in his bottom, so he says (thinks) that he has released air (yet he did not). He should not leave his prayer unless he hears the sound (of the air) or smells its odour.” (Ahmad, 8169)

The Wudu will break if you are certain that you have passed wind. (1) Doubts will not invalidate your Wudu. (2)

Only Allah knows best.
