Buying for Someone

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: A & B are friends. A tells B: “Buy a pen for me online, I shall pay you later.” Now when B goes to buy the pen online market, B finds there is a pen of R10. That website offers buy 1 get 1 free. So if B uses that coupon then he gets 2 pens for R10 and if not than he has to pay R10 for 1 pen. B uses that coupon and gets 2 pens and pays R10 from his own money. He keeps 1 pen with him and gives 1 pen to A and gets R15 from him. Is it halaal for B to keep that free pen and that extra R5?

A: When effecting the purchase of the pen, if you are acting as a representative of the person who appointed you then all benefits, discounts and free gifts will have to be passed over to who has appointed you.
