I would like to know if adoption of a child is permissible? I’ve heard that adoption is not good because later on when the child grows up, purdah would be necessary from their so called parents (of opposite sexes). I hope you understand what I mean. But in my case, I am thinking of that if I have a daughter, and I give them to my brother (who of course is her mahhram) and inshallah my sister-in-law would not have to face such heartbreaking purdah after raising a child because she have raised a female child. The reason why I am willing to give my child to them is because they have been married for a long time and yet Allah has not bestowed a child to them. I mean my sister-in-law always keep on saying that if inshallah Allah gives me another child, it will be hers. I’ve discussed it over with my husband and he says he doesn’t mind. Yet the only think that comes to my mind is ‘If Allah Wills, He could have given a child to them’ — and because it might be for their good that’s why Allah has not bestowed a child for them yet, but i am not sure? Are we allowed to do such things like adoption? I don’t want to earn Allah’s anger. I mean I hope to do what is right!
To adopt kids and rear them is allowed as long as the kid is under the age of maturity. When the kid reaches the age of maturity there should be separation as prescribed by the divine law if the gender are heterosexual. The laws of Islam are not similar to the laws of the west where a person becomes part of the family after being adopted. In Islam the kid would not be the heir to the family.
If you and your husband are fine then you can hand over the kid to your brother. And the thing you are concerned about when the girl reaches her age of maturity her Uncle would no longer be a mahram for her or would be, and that it won’t be a problem for the mother, or that if Allah has not given him why should we give him is not necessary. Just because he doesn’t have a kid doesn’t mean that Allah is displeased with him there could be a very good reason behind it. If somebody adopts a kid there is nothing wrong with that in the Islamic law. There is no such thing that it would displease Allah.
