Question

What is the authenticity of the following narration?

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. He has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi concurs.

Sayyiduna Buraydah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: “We were approximately 1000 riders with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). He dismounted and led us in two rak’ahs of Salah. He then faced us and his eyes were shedding tears. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) stood up and proclaimed, “May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, what is the matter O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?” He replied, “I sought permission from my Rabb to seek forgiveness on behalf of my mother but I was not permitted to do so, thus I cried out of sympathy. I also sought permission from my Rabb to visit her [grave], and was permitted to do so. I had prohibited you from visiting the graveyard but you should visit it and your visit [to the graveyard] should increase you in good.”
