Question

Is reading Surah Munafiqoon on Jumua a sunnah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The Prophet (s.a.w.) used to recite this surah in Salaat ul Jumua. Abu Raafi’ (r.a.) narrates,” Marwan left Abu Hurairah (r.a.) in charge of Madina, and he (Marwan) then left for Makka. Abu Hurairah (r.a.) then led us in the Jumua prayer. In the second rakaat after completing Surat Al Jumua, he read Suratul Munaafiqoon. I met him after the salaat and said to him that you have just read two surahs that Ali bin Abi Taalib (r.a.) used to read in Al Kufa, he responded by saying, ”I heard the Messenger (S.A.W.) reading them on the day of Jumua.”[1](Recorded by Muslim, Abu Dawood, and Tirmizi).

A narration reported by Ibn Abbas (r.a.) mentions,” the Prophet (s.a.w.) used to recite Surah Sajdah and Surah Ad Dahr in the Fajr Salaat on the day of Jumua and Surah Jumua and Munaafiqoon during the Salaat of Jumua itself.” (Muslim and Abu Dawood)[2]
