Isaal-e-Thawaab

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

What is the ruling of isaale thawab? What is the right method of doing isaale thawab and what are the benefits?

Answer:

Generally, when the term “Isaal-e-Thawaab’ is discussed it refers to passing over rewards to the deceased. We will therefore discuss the term in this context.

This is obviously an optional act, where we pass over the rewards of our Nafl (optional) acts of worship to the deceased.

Our good deeds can be passed over to the deceased by simply making an intention of passing over the rewards to them.

By doing so, we will receive the rewards of carrying out the good deed as well as the deceased person. We should therefore pass over the rewards of all our optional acts of worship such as optional Salaah, fasting, charity, Zikrullah, Tilaawat, etc. to our Marhoomeen. One may intend all the deceased people from the time of Adam Alaihis-Salaam up until the last person that passed away as well. The rewards (of our good deeds) may even be passed over to the living.

Similarly, one may have a Masjid built, or a well dug, or a hospital built for the benefit of the people. As long as the people derive benefit from it the deceased will receive the reward, if the intention was that of Isaal-e-Thawaab. If intention to pass over the reward to the deceased is not made (for the good deeds that we carry out) then only we will receive the reward thereof.
