Question:
Are card games permissible in Islam to play ? And if not what would be the reason ?
Answer:
Should a game (card game or any other) involve gambling it will not be permissible to play such a game.
There are many types of card games. A card game which predominantly entails gambling or other vices is Haraam and should be totally abstained from.
If these card games do not involve gambling, then although the gravity of the act would be somewhat less than that of gambling, then too, a person should abstain from these card games as they are of not benefit and a waste of valuable time. Many a times, engaging in such games causes neglect in one’s performance of Salaah and other Deeni obligations and responsibilities.
A person should refrain from involving himself in those things wherein there is absolutely no benefit.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have advised, “Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is leaving that which does not concern him (i.e. leaving out trivial pursuits).”

(إن شرط لمال) في المسابقة (من جانب واحد وحرم لو شرط) فيها (من الجانبين) لأنه يصير قمارا. الدر المختار (ص: 663) دار الكتب العلمية
(وإن شرط فيها) أي في المسابقة (جعل من إحدى الجانبين) مثل أن يقول أحدهما لصاحبه إن سبقتني أعطيك كذا وإن سبقتك لا آخذ منك شيئا (أو) شرط فيها جعل (من ثالث لأسبقهما) مثل أن يقول ثالث للمتسابقين أيكما سبق له على كذا (جاز) لأنه تحريض على آلة الحرب والجهاد لقوله – عليه الصلاة والسلام – «المؤمنون عند شروطهم».
وفي القياس لا يجوز لأنه تعليق المال بالحظر وعند الأئمة الثلاثة لا يجوز في الأقدام. (وإن) شرط (من كلا الجانبين يحرم) بأن يقول إن سبق فرسك أعطيتك كذا وإن سبق فرسي فأعطني كذا لأنه يصير قمارا والقمار حرام. مجمع الأنهر في شرح ملتقى الأبحر (2/ 549) دار إحياء التراث العربي
