Fasting on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the sacred months

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Kindly provide the reference and authenticity of the following Hadiths:

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is reported to have mentioned that: “The reward of 700 years of worship will be recorded for that person who fasts on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of the sacred months [of Rajab, Zil Qa’dah, Zil Hajjah and Muharram.]

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is also reported to have mentioned that a reward equal to two years of worship will be recorded for that person for each of the three days (i.e. Thursday, Friday and Saturday) of fasting during these sacred months.

Answer

The first Hadith in question has been recorded by Imam Ibn ‘Asakir and others (rahimahumullah) on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Tarikh Dimashq vol. 19 pg. 116; Also see: Ithafus Sadatil Muttaqin, vol. 4 pg. 256, Al-‘Ilalul Mutanahiyah, vol. 2 pg. 553, Talkhisu Kitabil ‘Ilal Al Mutanahiyah, Hadith: 523, and Lataiful Ma’arif, pg. 455, Dar Ibn Kathir edition)

‘Allamahs Suyuti and Zabidi (rahimahumallah) have graded this Hadith as weak.

(Kanzul ‘Ummal, Hadith: 24173 Ithafus Sadatil Muttaqin, vol. 4 pg. 256; Also see: Al-Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 748)

As for the second Hadith, perhaps you are referring to the Hadith recorded by Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) that is also reported on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 1789)

This Hadith has also been graded weak by ‘Allamahs: Munawi, Zabidi, and Azizi (rahimahumullah).

(At-Taysir, vol. 2 pg. 426, Ithafus Sadatil Muttaqin, vol. 4 pg. 256, and As-Sirajul Munir, vol. 3 pg. 343; Also see: Faydhul Qadir, Hadith: 8785, and Majma’uz Zawaid vol. 3 pg. 191)

Correct Translation of the second Hadith

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) Is reported to have said: ‘A reward [equal to] of two years worship will be recorded for the one who fasts on a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the sacred months.’

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
