“Accompany the intelligent, and you will be regarded to be part of them”

Question

What is the reference and Arabic text for this narration? Also, who is it attributed to?

‘Abdullah said:

“My father said to me, ‘O my son, accompany the intelligent, and indeed you will be ascribed to them, even if you are not from them! And do not accompany the ignoramuses, lest you are ascribed to them, even if you are not from them!”

Answer

Imam Abu Nu’aym (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the advice of the famous Tabi’i; Imam Tawus ibn Kaysan (rahimahullah) which he offered to his son, ‘Abdullah.

يا بُنَيّ، صاحِبِ العُقَلاءَ تُنْسَب إليهم وإن لَمْ تَكُنْ منهم، ولا تُصاحِب الجُهَّالَ فتنسب إليهم وإن لم تكن منهم
