There is no Taraweeh Salaah without performing Esha Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. In Ramadaan, the Imaam performed the Esha Salaah without Wudhu but he performed the Taraweeh Salaah with Wudhu; does this mean that the Esha Salaah and Taraweeh Salaah must be repeated as well? The Imaam told us the following night to repeat the Esha Salaah only. I just want to know if this is correct?

A. In essence, there is no Taraweeh Salaah without the performance of Esha Salaah.

Accordingly, if the Esha Salaah had to be repeated for valid reasons, the Esha Salaah should be repeated immediately and then followed by the performance of the Taraweeh Salaah. If however, the Esha Salaah was not repeated and was followed by the performance of the Taraweeh Salaah, the Esha and Taraweeh Salaah should still be repeated individually, at least, prior to Subah Saadiq (true dawn). After Subah Saadiq, there is no Qadha or repeating of the Taraweeh Salaah. Only the Esha Salaah must be repeated. (Hindiyyah 1/105)

As such, in the enquired case, the Imaam had advised the congregation correctly.

Note: The portion of the Quran that had been recited in an invalid Taraweeh Salaah, such as the above, would have to be repeated the following night/nights for purposes of completing an entire Quran in the Taraweeh Salaah.
