Is it permissible to give ones pet an Arabic name?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. Is it permissible to give ones pet an Arabic name?

A. It is permissible to give ones pet an Arabic name. There is nothing wrong in doing so.

As an example, the name of Rasulullallah Sallallahu alayhi Wasallam’s she-camel was Qaswaa’, the name of his horse was Luhaif and the name of his donkey was Ufair and stated in the Ahadith.

However, one should not give one’s pet names of the Prophets (Ambiyaa) of Allah and the Companions (Sahaabah) of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam due to their status and honour and to avoid showing any form of disrespect and disregard to their personalities.
