Is Ghusal necessary after undergoing a colonoscopy?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. I had a colonoscopy. Do I need to make Ghusal to perform Salaah?

A. A colonoscopy is a procedure used to detect changes or abnormalities in the intestine (colon). During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted in the anus, rectum and through the colon with a tiny camera at the tip of the tube that allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.

In terms of Shariah, undergoing a colonoscopy procedure does not necessitate the performance of Ghusal. However, if any blood or filth exits the anus, rectum or colon as the result of the colonoscopy, one’s Wudhu will be invalidated. Hence, the performance of Wudhu only will be necessary to perform Salaah. (Binaayah 1/257)
