Is wearing the phagri for the groom on his wedding a hindu custom?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:

Asalaamu Alaykum,

Is wearing the phagri for the groom on his wedding a hindu custom or just an indian one?

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

It’s an Indian custom. However, the wearing of the turban is a Sunnah of the Prophet (SAS) and Muslims wear this to practice the Sunnah. As such, Muslims will also chose to wear it for weddings for this reason, and not because it is an Indian custom. It must however be noted that the turban which is a Sunnah has a special way of being tied and worn. Those ready made phagris that we see being worn by hindus or Indians, are not in the way that a Sunnah turban should be. Hence, this type is an Indo-Pak culture and not specifically a hindu one.
