Ruling on Pregnant women and fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Salaams. I wanted to find out what’s the ruling on pregnant women and fasting? I just found out I’m pregnant about a week ago. I’m not getting any symptoms as vomiting or nausea but I do feel very hungry at times and tired and sleepy so I’d like to know if I should still go ahead and fast?

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

The fast of Ramadhan is also compulsory upon women who are pregnant. Women in this state are not absolved from observing the fast. However, an allowance has been given to a pregnant woman to miss her fast due to her state. In this case, she must make up for the missed fast at a later time.

If you find out that you are pregnant, then you should consult a reliable doctor to get medical advice regarding the observance of the fast. You can follow his advice in this matter.

And Allah Knows Best.
