Breaking a promise made to Allah Ta’ala

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If a girl made a promise that she won’t drink a certain drink and now she is finding it very difficult, what should she do? Also if she drinks the drink will she have to give kaffarah (she said the words promise)?

Bismillaah

A: Promising Allah is equivalent to taking a vow. And when you vowed to do or abstain then it is compulsory to honour the vow and if you violate it then the kaffaarah will be compulsory. This is when you have made this promise verbally.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
