Does lying in a job interview render the income haraam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

As-salaamu ‘alaykum,

I have been working as a data analyst in a software company for almost Five years and nine months, now I’m thinking to join another company which is based on big data and I have been attending the courses on big data for quite some time which will be completed in some days and now I have tell the interviewer that i’m working on big data for the last Five years and nine months, and have to lie in the resume and job experience. If i join the big data company and earn, will my income be considered as haram? Shaikh, please be as descriptive as possible. May Allah reward you.

JazakAllahu khair.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Brother.

We make dua that Allah Ta’ala grant you success in your endeavours and bless you with halaal sustenance. Aameen

Shari’ah emphasises truthfulness and honesty. Allah Ta’ala says:

O believers, fear Allah Ta’ala, and be with those who are truthful. (At-taubah:119)

We should be ever conscious of the fact that every action and word of ours is recorded and we will be answerable for it.

The messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mentions:

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Mas’ood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said” He who deceives is not of me (is not my follower), deception and cheating (it’s perpetrators) will be in the fire.” (Ibn Hibaan (12/369)

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Huraira (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) happened to pass by a heap of eatables (corn). He thrust his hand in that (heap) and his fingers were moistened. He said to the owner of that heap of eatables (corn): “What is this?” He replied: O Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam), these have been drenched by rainfall. He remarked: “Why did you not place this (the drenched part of the heap) over other eatables so that the people could see it? He who deceives is not of me (is not my follower).” (Muslim (1/99)

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Mas’ood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said “Verily truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to paradise. A man may endeavour to be truthful until he is recorded as a speaker of the truth. And Verily lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to hell. A man may endeavour to tell lies until he is recorded as a liar” (Al-Bukhari (8/25)

Sustenance and earnings are the decree of Allah Ta’ala. If one earns the wrath of Allah Ta’ala in attaining them, one will be deprived of the barakah (blessings) in them. Turn to Allah Ta’ala in supplication and put your trust in Him.

Translation: They planned, and Allah Ta’ala did the like; and Allah Ta’ala’s plan is the best. (Aal-Imraan:54)

Translation: You may dislike a thing yet it may be good for you; or a thing may haply please you but may be bad for you. Only Allah Ta’ala has knowledge, and you do not know. (Al-Baqara:216)

We advise you to abstain from speaking any lie in the interview. Express your desire for the job and effort undertaken to attend the courses to learn big data. Do not get despondent if you do not get the job. Remember, if you abstain from lies, you have earned a lot in the eyes of Allah Ta’ala in comparison to the earnings of this world. If you do speak lies and earn the job, the income will be halaal1. However, you should repent for speaking lies. It is also not sufficient to merely repent to justify acquiring the job. Speaking lies is indeed a sin2

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
