Making stories at a job interview

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

If during a job interview, for questions I do not know the answer or am not sure of, I fabricate the answers or tell a lie. If there is a strong chance that if I did not fabricate, I would have got rejected. I have been selected for the job and have the necessary qualification and capability for this Is it permissible for me to take up this job or not

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A person is expected to answer to the best of his abilities in job interviews, exams, etc. It is also understood that at times a person will guess or make educated guesses. Despite knowing this norm, the company has offered this job to you. If you honestly feel you have spoken a clear lie, then make tawbah and istighfar. In any way, it is permissible for you to take this job if all other aspects of the work you will be conducting are Shariah compliant.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
