Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu alaikum
Please put light on car insurance, as in today world it compulsory to have your car insured to drive on roads. What ulema advise in regarding car insurance, is both full insurance and third party insurance is allowed? I heard from one of the scholars that when it is mandatory one have to take insurance that too third party insurance, not full insurance. I need to take insurance for my car and dont want to go against shariah rules.

Jazakallah khair

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you on your sensitivity of staying away from Haraam.

All types of car insurance are haraam whether it is third party insurance or comprehensive insurance as it involves interest and gambling. If, however, one is obliged by the law of the country to do so, then one will be excused to take out third party insurance. [1]
