The reward for seeking knowledge and acquiring it

What is the authenticity of the narration?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whoever seeks knowledge and acquires it, Allah Ta’ala writes for him a double share of reward. And whoever seeks knowledge and does not acquire it, Allah Ta’ala writes for him a single share of reward.”

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Wathilah ibn Al Asqa’.

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 165, volume: 22)

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) states, “The narrators are reliable, although there does exist some debate with regards to some of the narrators”. Hafiz Haythami (rahimahullah) states, “The narrators have been declared reliable.”

(Targhib, vol. 1 pg. 96 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 1 pg. 123)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
