Sa’d ibn ‘Ubayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu), Al Qari

Was there a Sahabi by the name of S’ad ibn ‘Ubayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu)? He was called Al Qari.

Answer

Yes. Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded the following Hadith -mursalan-:

‘Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Layla says, Sa’d ibn ‘Ubayd was called ‘Al Qari’ [The expert Quran reciter] in the time of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 9 pg. 402)

Some reports suggest that he also assisted in compiling the Quran.

(Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 42 and Al Isabah, vol. 4 pg. 277-278)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
