Minor and major sins

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I would like to know if this statement is sahih or not:

“لاَ صَغِيَرَةَ مَعَ الإِصْرَارِ، وَلاَ كَبِيرَةَ مَعَ الاسْتِغْفَارِ”.

Answer

Translation: With persistence, a minor sin doesn’t remain minor (it becomes major) and with repentance, no major sin remains a sin (it gets forgiven)

This Hadith is recorded with a weak chain by Imams Daylami and Al-‘Askari (rahimahumallah) on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anuma) as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam).

(Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 1308)

However, others have recorded it as the statement of the Sahabi; ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anhuma), and not as a Hadith.

(Shu’abul Iman, hadith: 6882)

It is more cautious to quote it as his statement, although it is understood that he ultimately would have heard this from Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
