Sahabah would not commence eating until Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) started

Is there a Hadith which mentions that the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) would not commence eating until Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would commence?

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded the following Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhu):

“When we would eat with Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), we would not commence eating until he commenced”

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4 pg. 110)

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi concurs.

A similar narration is also recorded in Sahih Muslim on the authority of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah ibn Al Yaman (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2017)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
