Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reading the Tawrah

I have a query concerning the narration in which Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reads the Tawrah in the presence of Rasulullah (salallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) and the colour of the blessed face of Rasulullah (salallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) changes.

Is there any mention thereafter of the Ansar taking out their swords because of being angry with Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu)?

Answer

There are a few versions of this narration, Hafiz Haythami (rahimahullah) makes mention of one such narration which appears in Musnad Abu Y’ala which has the following words: …’The Ansar said, He [Sayyiduna Umar radiyallahu ‘anhu] has angered your Nabi, Get your weapons, get your weapons.

(Hafiz Haythami rahimahullah has classified this narration as weak. Majma’uz Zawaid vol. 1 pg. 173 and 182)

There is no mention in the above narration of the Ansar brandishing their swords, however it does have the words ‘get your weapons’. This Hadith also appears in various other Hadith collections without the words ‘get your weapons’.

These versions gain collective strength.
