Tying black beads around a newborn baby’s hands

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Please can you enlighten me if there is any significance in tying black beads around newborn babies hands to ward off nazar and the evil eye? If there isn’t any significance then is there any action from the hadith that we can adopt to protect the child from evil eye and sihr?

Bismillaah

A: This is not a Sunnah practice and there is no significance mentioned in the Ahadith for such an action. However it should be borne in mind that being afflicted by the evil eye is proven through the Hadith. In order for one to protect oneself or one’s children from the evil eye, it will be permissible for him to adopt any remedy that has been proven effective through experience, provided that the remedy does not entail one committing any impermissible action. Similarly, if the remedy one adopts has any resemblance with the ways of the kuffaar and their customs, then too one should refrain from adopting such a remedy. Hence, if tying black beads on a childs hand is proven effective through experience for warding off the effects of the evil eye, then it may be adopted. However, it should not be regarded as a Sunnah. The Hadith teaches us that reciting Masha Allah when seeing anything good saves the thing from being affected by the evil eye.
