Can a Muslim Woman Re-marry on the Same Day of Divorce?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

How soon can a woman marry another man after divorce? Also, let me know if there’s any possibility that she can skip the waiting period (`iddah). Can she remarry someone else on the same day she gets the divorce?

Answer

It is strictly prohibited (haram) for a woman to remarry another man on the same day that she is divorced by her husband and remarry anytime during her waiting period. She must wait until it’s over because it then becomes permissible.

One cannot merely skip one’s ‘idda because a woman is automatically in her ‘idda after she is divorced. It is a state that she has entered into, and this state does not expire until three periods of purity between menses (Shafi’i) have elapsed. It is up to her to follow the rules therein.
