Is It Permissible to Keep My Friend’s Money in a Sharia-Approved Profit-Bearing Savings Account?

Question

A friend of mine gave me a sum of money to keep in my bank account on his behalf. Would it be permissible to keep this money in a Sharia Approved profit-bearing savings account while keeping it safe for him? And would the profit earned from this money be permissible for me?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah guide us to that which pleases Him and forgive us for our shortcomings, Amin.

The money earned from savings accounts that reliable scholars have approved as compliant with Sacred Law is profit and not interest. It is, therefore, permissible earnings, and Allah knows best.

Differentiating between trade (which accrues profits) and interest (riba), Allah says: “Those who consume interest will stand ˹on Judgment Day˺ like those driven to madness by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, “Trade is no different than interest.” But Allah has permitted trading and forbidden interest. Whoever refrains—after having received a warning from their Lord—may keep their previous gains, and their case is left to Allah. As for those who persist, it is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.”

I pray this is of benefit.
