Is It Permissible to Wipe Khuffs With Socks Underneath? (Shafi’i School)

Question: As salam alaikum,

At a recent course on Shafi’i fiqh we were told that it is categorically not permissible to wipe over khuffs if we arewearing socks underneath them. Can you clarify this?

Answer: wa `alaykum assalam

It is permissible in the Shafi’i school to wear normal, everyday socks (that would not be considered khuffs) underneath something that fulfils the general conditions of khuffs.
It is likewise permissible to wipe over the khuffs while wearing said socks underneath.
This is not an area of disagreement in the school.
If one were to wear two layers of something that both constitute a khuff, one would wipe over the bottom layer. The school would not allow one to wipe over the top one alone, unless some moisture reached the bottom layer as well. This is because the top layer is considered an extraneous layer, the bottom layer being the one the concession actually applies to.
