Writing with the Left Hand

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Is it disliked for one to write with one’s left hand if it is difficult to do otherwise?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The sunnah is to do honourable acts (like writing) with the right hand unless there is an excuse, as is apparent. If one does otherwise because of an excuse, then one isn’t blamed. An example of an excuse is when one’s right hand is amputated, broken, or the like which render using it difficult.

As for merely being unaccustomed to writing with one’s right hand, it appears that this is not an excuse. Rather, one must be avid in training oneself to use one’s right. If one avoids using the right without excuse, is it disliked, as asked in the question? I haven’t seen anyone mention reprehensibility except regarding eating with the left. In any case, the least that can be said regarding the matter is that it is suboptimal, and Allah knows best.
