Alcohol in Perfumes, Aftershaves etc.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah

There have been numerous Questions regarding whether or not alcohol in aftershaves and other cosmetics is considered filth (najasah). This issue has been previously dealt with on the list by Sidi Mostafa Azzam, and you can dig up these old answers by going to http:// www.sunnipath.com and then searching for “Alcohol” in the Messages section.

In summary: if the alcohol is intoxicating, it is considered filth; otherwise it is not. Numerous people have asked for a categorization of which alcohols are filth and which are not. The answer to this is that we don’t know, and any chemists who can find out and let us know would be doing a great service.

wassalamu ‘alaykum
Hamza.
