I work in a bakery where the air is full of particles of flour. Does it invalidate my fast if I inhale this flour?
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Things that are difficult to avoid do not invalidate one’s fast. For example, if one is walking down a dusty street, inhaling the dust in the air would not invalidate one’s fast (cf. Hashiyat al-Jamal). It is similarly difficult for someone who works in a bakery to avoid inhaling the flour in the air and this would therefore not invalidate the fast. [1]

[1] The books of the Shafi`i school explicitly mention a number of cases where inhaling things does not invalidate one’s fast because the substance that is inhaled is difficult to avoid. These cases include the wheat chaff that goes into the air when one is making flour out of wheat, and the dust in the air in dusty streets. Shaykh Amjad explains below that the case described in the question is analogous to these cases and takes the same ruling.
السؤال صرحوا بأن غربلةَ البُرِّ إن وصلت إلى الجوف لم تفطر؛ لعسر الاحتراز عنها، فهل يلحق بذلك عاملٌ في مخبز يكثر فيه الدقيقُ في الهواء بحيثُ يعسر الاحتراز عنه؟ أم لا يلحق بذلك لأن الدقيق الذي في المخبز يختلف قليلاً عن الدقيق المصرَّح به في كتب المذهب لأن أصله ليس جعل البر دقيقاً بل الدقيق موجود وعسر الاحتراز عنه لآجل كثرة استعماله؟
الجواب : العلةُ في عدم فطر الصائم بوصول غُبار غَرْبلة الدقيق إلى جوفه هي عُسر الاحتراز عنه، وهذه العلةُ غير مقصورة على صورة الغربلة بل تشمل غيرَها بدليل عَفْوهم عن غبار الطريق كما هو منصوصٌ عليه، وبدليل أنه يُعفى عن غبار غربلة الدقيق في حق غير الذي يُغربل كما في “حاشية الجمل”. فالحاصلُ أن ما مِن شأنه أن يَعسر التحرزُ عنه يخفف فيه، وظاهر أن صورةَ السؤال كذلك، والله أعلم.
