Order of Making up Missed Prayers

Since we have to pray our missed prsyers in order, does that mean that when I am making up my missed prayers I have to always pray them in sets of Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Magraib, and Isha and never several Fajrs at one time?

One does not necessarily have to make up missed prayers in order. Some prayers are missed with an excuse and some are without.

If prayers are missed with an excuse, then Ibn Hajar and Ramli agreed that it is praiseworthy (sunna), and not obligatory, to make them up in order. Allah have mercy on both of them.

If they are missed without an excuse, then Ibn Hajar said that it is mandatory to make them up in order; and Ramli said it is praiseworthy, but still not obligatory to make them up in order.

If some are missed with an excuse and some without, then Ibn Hajar said that those missed with an excuse must precede those missed without one, and Ramli still said that the order is praiseworthy, but not mandatory.

This could be summarized by saying that Imam Ramli, Allah have mercy on him, said making up missed prayers in order is always praiseworthy and never obligatory; and Shaykh Ibn Hajar, may Allah’s mercy be upon him, said that order is praiseworthy if all the prayers are missed with an excuse, otherwise it is obligatory that those missed without an excuse be made up in order and that they precede those missed with an excuse. This is the summary of what is in Tuhfah, Shaykh Abdul-Hamid’s super commentary on it, and I’anah al-Talibin.1

So it is best that you make up your missed prayers in order, but you may do so out of order if necessary because there is room for this in Imam Ramli’s opinion in any case. And Allah knows best and He alone gives success.
