Washing Hands after Istinja

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Hamza Karamali, SunniPath Academy Teacher

How many times is it recommended that each hand be washed after going to the toilet? Is washing each hand once sufficient?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

If the hand is impure, then it must be washed until it is purified, meaning that it must be washed until the color, smell, and taste of the ritual impurity (najasa) is removed. If this is accomplished by a single washing, then a single washing is sufficient; if not, then one must keep washing it.

Once the hand is purified, it is recommended (but not necessary) to wash it two more times.

And Allah knows best.

Hamza.
