It is prohibited to Work as a Representative for Commercial Insurers

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Darul Iftaa Jordan
I graduated from university eight years ago, but up until now I haven`t found a job to earn a living from. I`m married, have two children, and support my sick mother. I opened a small grocery but it didn`t pay off, so I`m overwheighed with debts. I owe people five thousand JDs. Now, I have no source of income. While at university, I was offered a job in life insurance, but refused to take it. Recently, I have been offered a job in life and comprehensive insurance with an insurer stationed  in the United Arab Emirates. This job demands that I bring in as many customers as possible. Is it permissible for me to take it?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Working as a representative for a commercial insurer is prohibited because commercial insurance involves uncertainty and gambling.

We advise you (Asker) to do your best in searching for a halal job since whoever leaves anything for the sake of Allah, He will replace it with something better. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
