If a person leaves the fold of Islam and then reverts back to Islam, do they have to repeat all their passed Salaahs, Fasts, Zakaat and Hajj?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. A Muslim brother had left the fold of Islam. After much effort by the brothers of the Masjid, he reverted to Islam Alhamdulillah. Now that he has reverted to Islam, is it necessary for him to repeat all his Salaahs, fasts, Zakaat and Hajj?

A. It is not necessary for a Muslim who left the fold of Islam and then reverted to Islam, to repeat all his Salaahs, Fasts and Zakaat done previously. However, if after reverting to Islam, such a person has sufficient means over and above his/her needs and requirements to fulfill the needs of his/her family to perform Hajj, it becomes obligatory on him/her to perform Hajj immediately. (Fataawa Mahmoodiyyah 1/85)

In other words, such a person will follow the laws of Islam as a new Muslim without having to repeat previous actions.

Note: As it is necessary to renew and rectify ones belief when reverting to Islam, the renewal of Nikah between husband and wife is also necessary for both spouses to live together legally in Islam.
