Explanation of a proverb

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Can you please explain the origins of the proverb “If the mountain will not come to Muhammad (SAW), Muhammad (SAW) will go the mountain”.

Answer: This is the first time I’m hearing this proverb. However, it could have been said to emphasise the humility of Rasulullah Sallallahu alayhi wasallam. He would not hesitate to go and invite anyone, king or layman. He went to Ta’if even though there was not much hope of acceptance from them. He would accept and attend the da’wat of a slave too, even though we can understand how much a slave would have to offer for food.
