Daleel for fist length beard, otherwise short beard is haraam ??

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
What is the proof (daleel) for one to have a fist length beard, otherwise it’s haraam? Is there a single hadith that mentions minimum size to be “fist length”? I agree it is mustahab to have a longer beard.
The prophet peace be upon him has emphasized many times to lengthen one’s beard. Once upon a time, some people came to the prophet peace be upon him and there beards where shorter then a fist length. So the Prophet (pbuh) turned away his face from them and he stated that people should lengthen their beards and shorten their mustaches. From this, the scholars have stated that lengthening the beard is necessary. There is a dispute amongst the scholars with respect to how long the beard should be. We find in the lives of the companions that they used to keep the length of their beards to one fist. And what ever that grew more than that was cut. We find the same thing with the prophet peace be upon him. This is the reason the jurist have said that a beard more than one fist long should be cut, also, it helps in doing ‘khilal’ in ablution.
