In the funeral prayer one should look at the same spot as one would look during a regular prayer. Also, getting close in the prayer doesn’t mean that one should move so close that there is no space between people. There should be enough space in front of a person so that he can look at the ground during his funeral prayer. If for some reason a person can’t see the ground then he should lower his gazes and whatever he can see should be the place to look while in the prayer. However, it’s preferable that there should be enough space between two rows that one can look at the ground.
