Sharing home with Hindu Family

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalam Alaikum,

Currently, I am staying as a paying guest with the Hindu family. I have a separate room but I use the same kitchen. They do puja at the home also is it ok to share a house with them or should I move to another place. Sometimes I buy lunch from them is it ok to eat food which is cook by a Hindu. Please clarify.

Jazakallah.

As per the situation described in your question, there is no harm in sharing a house with a Hindu family, there is gunjaish (a provision of permissibility in this situation). Similarly, sharing and using their kitchen is also considered permissible. It is also permissible to buy food that they have cooked. The condition for this however is that there should be no mixing of any impermissible (haram) ingredient or any impurity while cooking the food and they should only utilize halal meats & poultry.

At the same time, it will be preferable (if possible without extreme difficulty) to move your dwelling to another house since the house where you are residing rituals such as puja (idol worship etc.) take place and obviously acquiring khair and barakah will not be possible in that situation.
