Breaking Fast

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

As Salam ‘Alaykum Wa Rahmatulahi Wa Barakatahu,

Respected Mufti sahab,

I humbly request you to please answer the following questions.

1.Recently I came to know about qadha salat and fasts.Alhamdulillah ,I understood the process and started doing accordingly.I have around 175 qadha fasts to make (couldn’t fast mainly due to pregnancies  and severe illness that I had a few years back).Recently,I came to know about the consequences of breaking fasts intentionally.Alhamdulillah, I try my best now to fast in the right way fulfilling all it’s requirements .In the process of calcuting my missed fasts, somehow it came to my memory recently that when I was around 18 years old I had done sehri and I was debating whether to fast or not and was more towards fasting. Then, around 10:00 in the morning when a meal was served for my brother who had just arrived from US I got tempted and decided not to fast and  ate food with my brother . I don’t think I even had the sense of making intention and  I was not aware that ramazan fasts were obligatory on me.I basically did not have the  right understanding of deen..Now,I am really confused about it.Please let me know what should I do about it.It’s bothering me a lot Mufti sahab .Also,I have been blessed now with the understanding Alhamdulillah but what about those years since these things were farz on me.I did tauba, asked Allah swt for help in calcuting the missed number and also made firm intention to complete them inshaAllah.I am trying my best to do it.I sometimes even think ,am I thinking too much.

2. This is after I got married .I intentionally tasted something for salt in it while making iftar .My husband is very particular about taste so I din’t wanted to dissappoint him.Though he never forced me for this.I just touched it at the tip of my tongue and quickly washed it away as I felt that it was wrong. Please let me know if I have commited a sin and what I need to do.

I know Allah swt is very merciful so I want to do whatever is needed in the above two situations.

3.Lastly,I would like to know what are the different types of fasts along with the ruling of making intention for all types of fast.

Please reply soon as I am in great distress.

I would like to request not to put it on your website and send the reply on my email.

May Allah swt reward you immensely in both the world.Ameen!

JazakAllahukhairan

  • For the fast broken deliberately you will have to perform both qadha(i.e. making up the fast) and kaffarah (performing atonement). The kaffarah for a deliberately broken fast is keeping fasts for 2 consecutive months or feeding 2 meals to 60 poor people. For the fasts that you have missed after becoming baligh, you will only have to perform qadha for them, which you can do in a gradual manner.
  • If there is a fear that the husband will get mad, tasting the salt while fasting is considered makrooh tehrimi(i.e. closer to haram).
  • There are several types of fasts e.g. fardh(mandatory) as we fast during the month of Ramadhan, qadha, wajib, kaffarah, or nadhr. Also, nafl fasts (i.e. not mandatory), such as the fasts we keep during the month of Muharram, Dhul-Hijjah,Shab-e-Bar‘at, Shawwal One should make the intention for the fast they intend to keep.
