Using Chapstick While Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Sidi Waseem Hussain

Question: i was wondering if chapstick when tasted  with the mouth and then the saliva swallowed would break the fast. would you recommended to avoid chapstick when fasting?

Answer: Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullah,

Using chapsticks or lip moisteners will not break the fast. These are applied on the lip, and the fast is only broken if a substance reaches the throat.

However, one has to be cautious and avoid licking the lips when it has been immediately applied. It will not affect the fast if licked later when no taste is found.

Unless there is a need, then it would be better to avoid using chapsticks and lip moisteners when fasting.
